Palermo – Mafia or Macho?

Beauties, today I’m taking you to Palermo – Italy’s fifth-largest city. Whoever visits Palermo and truly wants to experience it must understand what they are stepping into. The Sicilian way of life captures you from the very first moment – passionate, intense, and unforgettable. Palermo is a city in transformation, evolving between its grand past and a bright, chaotic future.

The Spirit of Palermo

Palermitans are returning to their roots, leaving behind anonymous suburbs and moving back into their historic Palazzi. Even the wealthy are rediscovering their family estates in the old town. The world-famous Teatro Massimo has reopened, symbolizing this cultural revival.

A visionary mayor redirected EU funds to restore the city’s true treasures, bringing life back to Palermo’s heritage. Yet, not all monuments shine in perfection – Sicilian bureaucracy moves slowly, very slowly. But that’s part of Palermo’s charm. The city’s soul lies in imperfection, in faded facades and timeless beauty. Coffee is still affordable, smiles are free, and life moves to its own rhythm. Palermo is not Cannes or Venice — it’s pure Dolce Vita.

Life, Taste & Style

Sicilian cuisine is a dream, one that has influenced all of Europe. Think Averna (founded in 1868 by Salvatore Averna), seafood markets, and charming wine bars along Via Maqueda. Each corner offers culinary delight and design inspiration. Italian joy at its best!

Charm in Every Corner

Palermo’s beauty lies in its contradictions. Some streets seem frozen in time — cracked walls, hidden gardens, and the scent of the sea mixed with espresso. The city’s soul is alive in the contrast between chaos and grace.

Walk along Via Maqueda and you’ll find everything you need — from small artisan shops to high-end boutiques. Don’t miss Giovanni Alongi (Via Ruggero Settino 46), Palermo’s most refined tailor and menswear designer. There you can buy a Loro Piana cashmere jogging suit and enjoy a glass of Ferrari Prosecco. Yes, luxury lives here too — discreet and personal.

Ballarò Market – Where East Meets West

The Mercato Ballarò is Palermo’s beating heart — an explosion of sound, color, and taste. Here, East meets West: Arabic spices, Sicilian fish, street food sizzling next to dried fruit and herbs. The air is filled with shouting vendors — a mix between a folk song and a muezzin’s call — as they proudly present their products. This is Palermo’s living theatre of flavor and chaos.

Between narrow alleys and vespas rushing by, you’ll find the essence of Sicilian life — loud, raw, delicious. If chaos ever had a culinary origin, it was born here.

Palermo’s Icons & Hidden Gems

Palermo is filled with history: the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale, the baroque Santa Caterina, and the Piazza Pretoria with its famous “Fountain of Shame.” According to legend, scandalized nuns once broke off the noses of the naked statues, unable to confront the rest of their anatomy.

Secret tip: Don’t miss Sicilò TuttiCrudi — one of the most exquisite seafood restaurants in the city. Officially listed as an ice cream shop, it’s actually a culinary jewel that has become known as far as Asia. Yes, there is “ice” — but it’s seafood on ice. A reservation is essential!

Between Orient and Europe

Palermo has stolen my heart. A few days are not enough to discover all its hidden bays, its passion, and its mix of Arab and European spirit. Palermo is a world of its own — chaotic, proud, and irresistibly beautiful.

I’ll be back.
Ciao Palermo!

with love,
xoxo Tanja
