Milano, Milano & Lago di Como – Pure Joy!

Italy — They say you have to see the magnificent Duomo di Milano at least once in your life. And they’re right! My journey began in Salzburg, with a detour through Frankfurt (thanks to Air Berlin’s creative routing), before finally touching down in the city of fashion, art, and aperitivo — Milan. Because honestly, when you can say “I’m spending the weekend in Milan,” life already feels a little more glamorous.

Arriving in Style – La Dolce Vita Apartment

My home for the weekend: the Milano Antica Apartment, a beautifully restored residence in a centuries-old palazzo just five minutes from the Duomo. Booked via Airbnb, it offered five-star comfort with authentic Italian charm — no hotel stress, just la dolce vita.

From its antique interiors to the home-cooked pasta and espresso mornings, every detail whispered “Welcome to Milan.”

The Icons of Milan

Milan needs no introduction, but the classics never lose their charm. The Duomo di Milano, whose construction began in 1386, stands as a symbol of Gothic beauty and Italian devotion. Under Napoleon Bonaparte, who crowned himself King of Italy here in 1805, its façade was completed by architect Giuseppe Zanola and later perfected by Amati in 1813.

No trip to Milan is complete without an evening at the legendary Teatro alla Scala. Located on Piazza della Scala, this world-famous opera house opens its season each December. For the best view, aim for the elegant Box 19 seats — a tip from the locals at La Scala itself.

Exploring Milan Like a Local

Taxis are scarce, but Uber works perfectly in Milan — sleek rides, Jaguars and all. The app runs smoothly, and payments are made online, making it a seamless way to move around this bustling city. It’s comfort with Italian flair — effortless, stylish, and smart.

After all, this is Milan — a city where even a drive feels like fashion.

Escape to Lago di Como

Just a 30-minute drive north from Milan lies Lago di Como, one of Europe’s most enchanting destinations. With a few coins for the toll road, you’ll soon find yourself winding through emerald hills toward pure magic. The village of Bellagio is a must — romantic, serene, and timeless.

The legendary Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, built as an aristocratic holiday villa and opened as a hotel in 1873, embodies the grandeur of Europe’s golden age. With only 95 rooms, its combination of luxury and ease has attracted international guests from culture, art, and politics for over a century. Vogue lists it among the world’s 50 most beautiful hotels — and the view over the lake is nothing short of “splendido.”

Bellagio to Varenna – A Scenic Dream

From Bellagio, a short ferry ride takes you across the lake to Varenna — a picture-perfect village of pastel houses, narrow alleys, and lakeside cafés. Above the town sits the Castello di Vezio, dating back to the 12th century, offering breathtaking panoramic views over all three arms of the lake.

Lago di Como’s magic lies in its contrasts — alpine mountains meeting Mediterranean gardens, history meeting elegance, and tranquility meeting glamour. It’s no wonder this place has inspired writers, artists, and dreamers for generations.

So, if you ever have the chance: say yes to Milan and Lake Como.
Ciao & xoxo,
Tanja
